We made the decision a few weeks back that it was time for our girls to have their own rooms. When Jayden wasn't quite 2 we moved her into Ryann's room and made the nursery a playroom. This was beneficial in two ways. One, we had a room dedicated to the mass mess of toys, and two, Ryann would have protection in the night.
Ryann is 3.5 years older than her sister but often seeks Jayden's protection from things that go bump in the night. By moving Jayden into the room we no longer had to lay with Ryann until she fell asleep, and that was a good thing.
The older Jayden gets the more we realize that she is the Energizer Bunny. She requires less sleep than Ryann does and thinks it's perfectly acceptable to sing Hannah Montana songs until midnight while Ryann tosses and turns in complete frustration.
In order to make the move more attractive for Jayden I knew some redecorating was in order. At first I offered to paint the room pink, because was 4.5 year old girl can resist a pink room? But then the voice of reason, Big Papa, chimed in and said "in six-and-a-half years of living in this house our bedroom is the only room that we have not painted." (Or done anything to, to be honest) "We are not going to repaint that room right now."
So, I brainstormed for a bit and decided that I could leave the room blue if I came up with the right "theme". So after a bit of searching I found this, and she loves it.
Last night, after several evenings of purging through toys, removing our stuff from the playroom closet, sorting who would get what in their room, etc., our last step was to strategically place some Mermaid wallies on the wall. When I say strategically I mean if there was a hole somewhere it was covered by a mermaid, or a seahorse, or maybe a fish. For Ryann's room we purchased some new pink, striped sheets, and a pink clip-on lamp so she can read in bed.
The end result is 3 nights of girls who have fallen asleep on their own, in their own rooms, without annoying the crap out of each other, or their parents. A bonus of all of this is that I feel like 2 rooms of my house are completely clean. They are free of too small clothing, baby toys, baby equipment, toy boxes, and I have made about $100 in the process. Ahhh, sweet peace.
